Orange County Motorcycle Laws

Orange County drivers must follow the road safety laws that are in effect in the state of California. Here are some of the most important rules for motorcyclists.

Helmets and Safety Equipment

bike with helmetCalifornia has several regulations in place governing safety equipment. Helmets must be worn at all times by all motorcycle riders and passengers. These helmets must be strapped firmly to the chin, fit properly and meet federal safety standards.

Motorcycles must also have working turn signals at the front and back, and those that were manufactured from 2013 onward must have exhaust systems that comply with the Motorcycle Anti-Tampering Act.

No laws dictate a minimum age for motorcycle passengers, but they must be at least 4 feet and 9 inches tall, which is the height required to no longer need a safety seat. All passengers must have a seat that is securely fastened to the motorcycle and equipped with footrests, which the rider must use when the motorcycle is in motion.

Lane Splitting Laws

California is the only state in the nation that allows lane splitting without restrictions on state roadways. This means that motorcyclists are permitted to drive between two lanes of traffic to get around vehicles.

The Golden State has also enacted some laws to protect motorcycle riders while lane splitting. For example, motorists are prohibited from driving at speeds slow enough to impede reasonable traffic movement except when it is necessary for safety reasons. Motorists are only permitted to open their vehicle doors if they can do so without interfering with traffic movement.

What to Do After an Orange County Motorcycle Accident

If you are involved in a motorcycle accident in Orange County, the steps you take afterward can have a considerable impact on the outcome of your case and your ability to seek compensation for damages. It is important to proceed cautiously and follow the advice of your Orange County motorcycle accident attorney. The steps below can serve as a general guideline.
